Marianne is the alrical symbol of the French Republic and by extension of France . Appeared in 1792 , Marianne is a woman wearing the red Phrygian cap . It represents France freed from the "slavery" of the absolute monarchy . Its installation, which was gradual, in French town halls dates from the end of the 1870s, when the Republicans definitively installed the Third Republic .
Like many countries, France has often been represented as a woman. The red colored Phrygian cap was the cap that slaves freed (freed) by their masters wore in Rome in antiquity. Wearing the Phrygian cap therefore means being freed from slavery, this cap was worn by the sans-culottes during the French Revolution.
