This pretty dress was made at home, I believe in the 1950's. A woven, pink and white mini gingham cotton was used. There is a high yoke on the front bodice, below which there is a 5.5” elaborate hand smocked band in blues and white. The smocking on this dress is just exquisite, with a sampler's worth of various stitches used. Two toning shades order of blue and white are used with tiny rosebuds embroidered near the waist. The skirt is full and gathered. Sleeves are very puffed and bias self bands are used for cuffs. The collar is made from white batiste, has pink featherstitching around the edges and the same tiny rosebuds used on smocking panel are embroidered at front edges. A machine lace trims the outer edges.
In back, the yoke is deeper than front yoke and has gorgeous white vintage buttons as closure. The back skirt is gathered onto yoke and has three rows of smocking just below seam. Wide self sashes make a wonderful fat bow in back. Size is a 4, possibly a 5. Condition is very good with only a few tiny pinholes in front near hem which have been mended. (These are generally not seen when worn due to the gathers.) Otherwise the dress is all original and of beautiful workmanship with French seams and hand embroidery. The smocking is of heirloom quality not often seen today.
