The front of this medal features a wonderful image of St Joan in her armor on a rearing horse and carrying her battle flag. It shows the French spelling of her name "Jeanne D'Arc". The reverse of the medal shows a rare portrayal of St Joan's martyrdom when she was burned at the stake by the English. At age 17 she was given a small army and captured the city of Orleans. She went on to have several amazing military victories. She attended King Charles VII?s coronation in Reims, but the next year she was captured and sold to the English who put her on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Joan?s answers her prosecutors with wit and bravery. Ultimately she was convicted of wearing men?s clothes (which she wore because they protected her modesty from her male guards) and burned at the stake in 1431 at age 19.
