A men's silk tie was used in the making of this nuno felted scarf. Some beautiful silks are used in making men's ties. I thought it would be a great idea to upcycle a tie and use it in nuno felting. Usually a looser weave is used but with a little more effort, finer weaves may be used also.

The underside of the scarf is a chocolate brown merino wool. The top layer is a sandy or camel brown merino wool. I unpicked the seams of a men's silk tie and placed the pieces on top of the wool. It was a chocolate brown with gold highlights. Silk fiber was used as a highlight.

In the finished scarf, you can see how the silk from the tie is ruched. This is because the wool shrinks as it is felted. The wool fibers penetrate through the silk and kind of gather it up during the felting. This is the wonderful texture created by nuno felting. The felt itself is kept very thin. lt may even have a little hole or two. This enables it to drape very nicely. It is very warm and cozy despite being so thin.

This scarf was handmade by nuno felting. In this type of felting, wisps of wool are placed over a loose weave fabric, typically silk chiffon. Silk fibers and decorative yarns may be placed on top order of the wool. Then soapy water is sprayed on. Everything is agitated, usually by rolling with bubble wrap, until felt is made. The wool fibers travel through the fabric forming a permanent bond. Hot and cold rinses then "throwing" ensue. It is a combination of design and physical effort that takes several hours or sometimes several days, depending on the size and complexity of the piece, to complete.

The finished scarf measures 63 X 14 inches, 160 X 36 cm.
May be hand washed in cool water. Rinse in same temperature. Hang to dry. Iron on silk setting.
