Enormous 1980s order -Modernist-Mixed Metals Earrings- Sterling Silver, Copper & Brass (2.85”)

These are a outstanding pair of modernist earrings artisan crafted sometime in the 1980s.

In the 1980s jewelry made a statement, it was glamorous, beautiful and bold.
One way to make a piece of jewelry bolder and larger was to use brightly polished precious metals and large faux gemstones. Instead of delicate feminine pieces, jewelry artisans/design houses worked to create the jewelry that fit the “larger than life” fashion trends. These looks required a lot of precious metals….
Of course, adding more precious metals made fine jewelry even more expensive but Jewelers in the 1980s were a creative bunch and managed to reduce the cost of their designs by mixing metals. Instead of using only gold, silver or platinum many pieces mixed in another somewhat less expensive metal, like bronze. This allowed the larger 1980s jewelry styles to be affordable.
