This vintage sterling silver and turquoise ring is in excellent condition. The ring consists of one centered, 10 mm round turquoise stone surrounded by eight 2 mm sterling silver balls with an adjustable band with two 4.5 mm sterling balls each placed where the band meets the mounting. The mounting is very securely mounted to the adjustable wrap silver band. The band's gauge is approximately 1/16th of an inch thick and and will not alter is size with normal wear. It has a weight of 6 grams. I can be adjusted smaller than size 6.5 and greater than size 12.
While it does not have a Taxco hallmark I believe it is. I base that on the fact that I found this among my stepfather sales sample case. He was sales rep who sold Taxco jewelry in the late 1960s. The silver hallmark beside the word MEX is very worn but began as an eagle, indicates this ring was made sometime after 1955 and into the late 1960s or early 1970s.
It is easy to image a ring like this worn in the 70s by women such as Joan Baez, Nancy Griffith, Emmy Lou Harris or Linda Ronstadt.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s Taxco became the center for Mexico's silver arts. Many Americans artists/silversmiths moved to the region to contribute in what would become one of the worlds meccas for arts and crafts.
Initially many of the silver pieces coming from this region were disregarded as being clunky or heavy. In time these order pieces entered the main stream and have now become highly collectable.
