Authentic, antique / vintage early 1930s to early 50s Chi-Namel Rex Flat Paint counter display paint sample sign or possibly salesman's sample. Appears never used as a counter display. Very scarcely found in any condition so its authentic wear & minor flaws are most acceptable. Chi-Namel was a brand of the Ohio Varnish Co., Cleveland, Ohio, originating c. 1900 and, as was typical of the era, uses a caricature of a traditionally dressed Chinese man as its logo. While the Ohio Varnish Co. went out of business in the 1930s, the Chi-Namel brand of paints and varnishes continued until the order 1950s.

Info published by The Athenaeum on Ohio Varnish Company:
"The Ohio Varnish Company was established in Cleveland in 1881, but did not gain prominence until it introduced its "Chi-Namel" brand name in 1901. Widespread advertising and in-store demonstrations promoted Chi-Namel products for coating almost every surface within the home -- walls, floors, furniture -- as well as exterior surfaces including motor boats, automobiles and airplanes. The Ohio Varnish Company was liquidated in the 1930s; however, Chi-Namel products continued to be offered under the banner of the Chi-Namel Paint and Varnish Company until at least the early 1950s."
