Watercolor Painting of Skunk Cabbage. A pretty flower in an eye-popping yellow, the unfortunately named Western Skunk Cabbage is a wonderful wildflower found along boggy areas in Oregon during the Springtime. I came across these flowers in bloom in the early morning one day and loved the color and the drops of water from an overnight rain.

It sprouts very early in the season and has an unusual chemistry where the leaves create heat that melts the snow around the plant and warms up the ground. Native to the Pacific Northwest, skunk cabbage is a member of the Arum (Araceae) family. When the leaves are crushed or bruised, the plant gives off an unpleasant (to humans) skunk or rotten meat smell. Bees and butterflies love the smell, however.
