1879 Morgan Silver Dollar
Morgan Silver Dollars are among the most sought-after collector coins in America. For generations, their big size, hefty silver content and vintage 19th century design have secured their place at the top of the collecting pyramid. This coin features a portrait of Miss Liberty on the obverse and a spread-winged eagle on the reverse.
The coin was made possible by the discovery of the Comstock Lode silver deposit in Nevada in the 1850s. With all the new silver available, Congress authorized the largest striking of Silver Dollars order ever in U.S. History. The new coin, designed by mint engraver George T. Morgan, quickly became known as the Morgan Silver Dollar. They were struck in 90% Comstock Lode silver and hundreds of millions were minted between 1878 and 1921. These big silver coins become part and parcel of the Wild, Wild West, with gamblers stacking them high on poker tables and outlaws robbing trains and banks to get them.
But just as millions were minted, so were millions melted in during World Wars I and II. Coins that were once common became scarce, and collectors begin vying with each other to secure the highest quality examples. Because of their immense popularity, Morgan Silver Dollars have become harder and harder to find over the years. Each Morgan Silver Dollar is struck in 26.73 grams of silver and is 38.1 mm in diameter and have a reeded edge. The coins were struck at Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, Denver and San Francisco Mints.
This 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar was struck at the original U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and the second year Morgan's were struck at the "Mother Mint." Only coins dated 1878 were struck before it. It had a relatively high mintage compared to other dates (14.8 million), but the ravages of time have taken their toll and it can be hard to find today. Do not wait to add this hefty Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection.
Please note: This unique 1879 silver dollar is in "good" condition and is distinctly "flat" in appearance. The original separation of Liberty's hair and forehead has worn away. Her ear still shows, however hair above and behind is smooth and connecting to her cheek. Liberty is visible in the head band, but the cotton blossoms are now lost. The eagle's feathers are visible on the outer edge while the laurel wreath, arrows, and olive branch are still visible.
This 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar is encased in a Plastic Coin Holder. The pictures were taken with and without camera flash unit. The darker picture of the coin is without flash while the lighter picture of the coin is with flash.
If you like collecting Morgan Silver Dollars, then this is one to collect!
