Sitting Elk, Apsaroke, c. 1908 by Edward Curtis.
Born circa 1827, Sitting Elk was a member of the packs Game Clan of the River Crow. he never fasted for a vision, but an injury to both his eyes at the age of six resulted in a dream that eventually formed the basis of his medicine power. He became famous among the Crow when, abandoned by his comrades, he fought off a Flathead war party single-handed for several hours.
