This is an antique Franklin autobiography - "The Life of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, Written by Himself, to Which is Added His Miscellaneous Essays." 1857; Miller, Orton & Company; New York and Auburn. The book features an engraved frontispiece portrait of Franklin with tissue paper. There are four pages of advertisements at the back.

Here are a few of Franklin's essays that are included: On Early Marriages; Morals of Chess; The Handsome and Deformed Leg; The Art of Procuring Pleasant Dreams; Advice to a Young Tradesman; The Way to Make Money Plenty in Every Man's Pocket; Sketch of an English School; Paper - A Poem; New Mode of Bathing; On Luxury, Idleness, and Industry; Observations on War; On the Slave Trade; The Internal State of America...and many more.

From the Publisher's Advertisement: "The autobiography of Dr. Franklin narrates his life till 1757, when he was in his 51st year. This is contained in the following volume, together with a continuation, by another hand, of the history of his remarkable career till his death. It is believed that the value of the work has been much enhanced, by appending a selection of some of the best of Franklin's inimitable essays."

Condition:
Clean front cover and spine; there is a thin, light vertical stain strip on the back cover. Small cloth tears at the corners; the top and bottom edges of the spine are worn. There is a small cluster of 10 pages (from the 1st Publisher's order Advertisement page to page 20) that are attached along the inner edge, but have separated from the binding and are detached. The text pages are in very good condition - mostly clean with only some light staining on the last contents page, and some light foxing on the frontispiece, title page, and the tissue paper in between. Affixed to both the front and rear pastedowns are old advertisements for "Dr. John Deichman" medicinal products.
