Product code: 1849 Guardianship Letter Anna Jenkins Hoppin Dr Samuel Boyd Tobey order Providence RI

Wonderful vintage authentic Letter of Guardianship document dated December 25, 1849, involving Anna A. Jenkins (1831-1919) of Providence, RI, and the official appointment of Dr. Samuel Boyd Tobey (1805-1867) as her legal Guardian in Providence, RI. Single page folded into four pages with court text on one page, notation on another, interesting Providence RI watermark on another order and fourth page blank. Also has red Seal of Municipal Court of Providence, RI. Anna Jenkins was the daughter of William Jenkins who had died in 1846 and her mother Anna Almy Jenkins (1790-1849) who had died month before in house fire that also claimed life of her younger sister. Anna Jenkins (b. 1831) was the great-granddaughter of Moses Brown, one of the founders of Brown University and wealthy merchant in RI. Her mother, at time of her death, was considered by many to be the wealthiest woman in the U.S.

Dr. Samuel Boyd Tobey was an amazing man himself with many accomplishments, he was close to the Jenkins family and so Annas guardianship was likely a no-brainer. However, Anna had turned eighteen earlier in the year and was likely quite wealthy so why a guardian was necessary seems interesting. Possibly for financial management reasons. Maybe someone with greater historical knowledge will let us know?

Anna went on to marry Thomas Hoppin (1816-1873) and resided in what became known as the Hoppin House (or the house of a thousand candles) at or near Brown University grounds. She did remarry after Thomas died.

This is a historical RI document in very good condition just normal creasing. Measures approx. 8x12". Zoom in on pics as part of description. Watermark notation for listing purposes only. We have dozens of documents related to the Almy, Jenkins, Brown family and certain of it authenticity. This will ship fast and FREE signature required. Own a piece of RI and Brown University history!
