Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle with stunning hand colored plates from leading French artists of the day order such as Susemihl, Travier, Oudart and Pretre, is widely considered to be the finest and best illustrated natural history work of the era.

Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (6 September 1802 – 30 June 1857) was a French naturalist who made major contributions in many areas, including zoology (including malacology), paleontology, geology, archaeology and anthropology.
